Gran Canaria is the most popular of the Canary Islands - not least for the Danes, who especially in the winter months, enjoy the always bright sun and lovely warm temperatures.
The beautiful island, located just a few hundred kilometers from the coast of Africa, welcomes over 3 million tourists each year, with most traveling to the southern or eastern part of the island, where the sun shines almost all the time, and rain is a rarity. Here you will, consequently, find a string of delightful seaside resorts and beautiful beaches.
There are numerous good beaches to be found on Gran Canaria, where the beach at Maspalomas is the largest, but also Playa del Inglés and Punta de Meloneras is worth mentioning. Maspalomas is best known for its unique sand dunes - an impressive piece of Sahara right next to the warm, blue sea, which also offers exciting deep sea fishing.
The South's main beach is also known for its old lighthouse that has been present ever since the island welcomed the first tourists and the entire area was turned into a popular holiday resort.
Gran Canaria – the tropical island
The beaches of Playa de Inglés and Punta de Meloneras are completely interconnected, allowing one to wander from one beach to another. In addition to the obvious sunbathing opportunities there are two nudist areas. Due to the great waves, you will also find many surfers, which creates a mix of visitors including hikers, nudists and surfers, who all roam freely on the three beach areas.
Gran Canaria also has a lush, green side. Explore the center of the island where you can hike in silence in the mountains and the beautiful valleys. Despite the fact that Gran Canaria is small, it has an exceptionally rich natural heritage. The uniqueness of its ecosystems, its flora and fauna - including species found only here - and its geology have led the public institutions of the Canary Islands, Spain and other international institutions to ensure the preservation of the island's natural treasures.
Shop duty free in Las Palmas
The city of Las Palmas has the utmost supply of duty-free goods, as the Canary Islands are a duty-free territory.
